The journey was a collaboration between Rebecca Beinart, Claire Long and Anna and Mark Keleher. It was an improvised adventure experienced through road networks and ferry lines from Totnes, UK to Helsinki, Finland and back in a small van. On this journey we went through France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden and Denmark. The journey across 16 borders took 17 days and was documented in various ways: sonically for this radio program, through collaborative drawing, whittled tally sticks and in writing.
Based on this journey, the "illustrated radio journey" weaves together sound art and sonic travel journal. On-site recordings, ambient sounds, creative reflection and narration are woven together to give the listener glimpses of the experiences of a collaborative journey by land and sea. The collaborative drawings and tally-sticks also created on the journey provide visual counterparts to the radio piece. The illustrated radio journey lives here on the web and through a series of coordinated installations and radio broadcasts.
